COVID Mourning Armband

|

This project was made during the first year of the pandemic, 2020, when many Americans thought the pandemic was a hoax. At that time, the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t seem real to many Americans because they hadn’t been able to see it. I spoke with people who said that because they didn’t know anyone who had gotten the disease or died from it, that it must not be real.

What if we revived the practice of wearing armbands for mourning, to manifest our grief, and to show others that the loss of life is real? Even now, years into the pandemic, when most Americans have gotten the disease yet are trying to return to pre-pandemic living, would a visual reminder help people to take precautions like masking more seriously?
