What if we brought all our own packaging to grocery stores? The grocery backpack, created in 2020, doubles as a grocery basket. Extend one strap and wear the bag messenger style.
Most cloth produce bags are rectangular, which lets food particles build up in the corners. The grocery backpack comes with rounded corners so as to prevent food build-up.

Instead of opening at the top, the bag opens at the side, for easy shopping. It comes with two compartments, one smaller and one larger, but the overall shape of the bag is symmetrical so that it can be worn with the smaller compartment at the top or bottom of the bag. This lets the wearer put the heavier items in the appropriately sized compartment. When in backpack mode, the bag can be worn with those heavier items at the bottom, so as to provide a more stable center of gravity while also making sure the heavier items don’t crush the more delicate food that is at the top of the bag.
For this project, I created a sewing pattern for and sewed several iterations of the bag using different shaped compartments and strap mechanisms.
Thank you to Grace Spee and Bansri Thakkar for modeling.
